Once again I dreamed about the concert. But this dream was quite unlike the
dream I had last night. Everything was coming together. I saw a way to form a
company to put on a very large concert with the possibility of coverage by a
music television network. I awoke with the rising sun, headed outside by the pool
and there I put onto paper the concert that had formed in my head last night in
my dream. I wrote the concert plan in my red travel book, allocating my friends to
specific concert job functions. The concert plans were as follows:
First of all I needed a band. As before, I planned to contact my friend Dana in
Seattle. He had a small time band the last time I talked to him six years ago. The
band he had then was pretty good and I wasn't looking for perfection. I wished
for his current band (if he had one) or a band he could put together to be the
core of the concert. I planned to add myself to the band as a vocalist along with
my friend from high school Alice. Now, I hadn't seen Alice since high school and I
knew nothing of her current life, let alone her ability to still carry a tune. But Alice
had the greatest voice in choir and she as well as myself had performed in the
Junior High School plays, so performance would be nothing new to either of us.
Second, I needed some entertainment. And I really did have at least one real
act. My next door neighbor Annette, the one who planted the travel seed in my
head, had a son younger than myself. His name is Lane. Not long after his
mother's death Lane left Seattle for Texas where for the past eight to nine years
he has been a professional male dancer at nightclubs. I would arrange for him
and a few of his work mates to perform during the concert to the surprise of the
audience. Assuredly a few of the female college students would be excited by
this act. I also planned to counter this act with a female dance act of similar
qualities.
Third, I still planned as before to intersperse the concert with performers and
models displaying the outrageous science fiction type costumes designed by my
high school classmate Marti. The costumes could hopefully be sewn together
with the help of Annette's oldest son Rudy, a high class dress designer in the
garment section of Los Angeles.
Fourth, I wished to demonstrate some computer music developed by the Center
for Music Research housed at the campus of the University of California, San
Diego. I knew the director of the center well enough or it was more likely that he
knew of me since I tended to be a trouble maker (administratively) to campus
administration of which he was a part.
And finally, for technical assistance, I would employ the help of a couple of
engineer friends in San Diego as well as the help of an engineering technician.
Now, all of the above acts were nothing great in and of themselves. But the next
part of the concert, the firming up of the dream last night, is what I felt really
made the concert stand out.
In my work experience at General Dynamics I had the opportunity to conduct my
work in a secretive environment. I never really enjoyed that environment, which
is part of the reason why I left work and why I am traveling now. I intended to
carry this aspect of my work over into the concert but in a fun way. The idea was
to unsuspectingly surprise the audience as well as the concert performers with
guest performers. Neither the audience nor the performers themselves would
have a clue that a guest performer was to appear.
As in the previous dream I still planned to hold the concert at UCSD on the last
day of class this year. It would be an outdoor concert as usual beginning at
about 5:00 p.m. Only UCSD students would know of the concert per campus
policy and as usual no fee would be charged.
The band would be introduced as a new band, which it truly would be, with an
indication of the type of music they would play. I would introduce myself as a
graduate of the UCSD Engineering Department, giving the title of the concert as
"An Engineer's Revenge". I would further introduce the concert as a memorial to
my brother Michael who died of AIDS and to all other victims of AIDS.
The band would begin. The first "surprise" would be unveiled pretty quickly. The
band would not sound very pleasing, indeed not well practiced. After a few bars
though I would stop the band, give a short pep talk in hopes of getting things
together, apologize to the crowd, and begin again. This time, I hope, the band
would sound better. The concert would proceed with the previously described
acts coming out at various times.
At about midpoint Alice would begin the vocal of a well-known popular tune of a
famous vocalist. Toward the beginning of her song her microphone would begin
to have problems. So, I would calmly walk on stage, stop the band, give Alice a
new microphone, and have the band start anew.
The band would start and Alice would begin to sing. Unfortunately, for Alice, her
microphone would be turned completely off. This is definitely unfortunate for
Alice because she has such a terrific voice and she could sing the tune well.
Fortunately, however, for the audience someone else is singing the song from off
stage. The voice will sound familiar and she will walk on stage in one of the
science-fiction costumes so her form will be slightly disguised. But soon her
voice will give her away. The audience, UCSD students attending a free concert,
a concert which is normally a yawn, will suddenly take note. If they hadn't already
realized the concert unfolding before their eyes and ears was not the normal
TGIO concert, they would realize now. The person singing the song disguised in
one of Marti's alien costumes is what I was to refer to as my H-bomb, a very
talented singer, actress, and performer.
She would finish her song and hopefully sing a couple more of her famous tunes
and she would be swept away into the night. With her performance the audience
will have been surprised but out of everyone the most surprised would be Alice,
for she will have known nothing of this act. After the famous performer's exit the
concert would continue with the non-famous band and vocalists.
Later in the concert the band would begin the song of a famous popular band.
Due to technical problems again the band would restart. As with the previous
special guest, the real band would begin to play from off stage with the real
vocalists coming on stage in costumes to present themselves. This surprise
would be what I refer to as my A-bomb. They would play their desired tunes and
the concert would be nearing its close.
The concert would end with a few more songs by the non-famous band and
vocalists and a few closing statements by me.
Such were the plans which I sat down and wrote in my red travel book this
Monday morning. Still tired, I headed back to bed and arose at about 10 a.m.
when René arose.
